Reverend James Mitchell Jr. peacefully passed away at the Masonic Home of Virginia on November 8, 2018. He was born on April 4, 1928 to James and Beadie Mitchell of Rogersville, Tennessee .He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Luvirda Fay Mitchell, his daughters Sylvia Ann Goldman and Nancy Mitchell Higgs, and his grandson Aaron Jon Goldman. He is also survived by his brothers Reed Mitchell, Sam Mitchell, and Curry Mitchell and his sisters Shirley Vaughn and Kate Silver.
He was affectionately known as Jim to friends and as Junior to relatives. Jim served in the Army from 1945-1947. After discharge from the service he obtained his HVAC License and worked at the John Hopkins Physical Lab for several years. His formal education, in preparation for the ministry, began when he attended Clear Creek Bible College in Pineville, Kentucky from 1959-1962. He then completed his first 2 years of college at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia and went on to receive his BA in 1966 from Carson-Newman College, a Christian liberal arts university in Jefferson City, Tennessee. He completed his education attending the SoutheasternBaptist TheologicalSeminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Jimand his family relocated to Crownsville, Maryland in 1967, where he served as minister of South Shore Baptist Church until he retired.
In 2009, Jim and Luvirda decided to move to the Masonic Home of Virginia which offered a loving Christian setting with extensive accommodations where they could get the quality and high level of care as needed.
Visitations will be held at Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills, Maryland on November 20, 2018, at 6:00 pm, followed by a service at 7:00. pm.
