George Bernard Junghans

On Sunday, June 17th, 2018, a resident of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area since birth (October 6, 1922), passed peacefully in Annapolis, MD at age 95. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanore Orthofer Junghans, the eldest son of George Ralph and Elizabeth Junghans, the longest lived of all six siblings, and the cherished “Uncle George” for scores of friends and nieces, nephews, grand nieces, nephews and great grandnieces and nephews.

George was a World War II Veteran, where he served in Germany in Army Intelligence. After the war he spent a brief stint in the US, and returned to Germany to continue work for Army Intelligence, where he met Eleanore and they were married. Upon returning to the US, he launched a 30 + year career with the US Navy.

George was a devoted husband, a loyal friend, one who touched and helped many, a self-educated intellectual, a lover of the arts—music, drama, art—a vibrant and unforgettable soul, who enjoyed sports (especially soccer), travel, westerns, reading and puzzles, but was happiest when surrounded by and discussing life with his extended family.

A memorial service of his life will be celebrated at a future date.
