Lieutenant Colonel Walter J. Zarnowski, USA (Ret.), 88, died September 28 due to complications from a fall. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, PA. Walt saw action in the European Theatre, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He proudly served as an Army Infantry Officer during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during that conflict and the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement during the Viet Nam War. Upon his retirement after 27 years in the military, Walt taught Physical Education for 11 years in several elementary schools in Anne Arundel County. He was preceded in death by his son, Walter, who died in 1979 from muscular dystrophy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth B. Zarnowski; three daughters, Janet Price and Dee Zarnowski, both of Annapolis, and Zoe Marshall and her husband Tim of Norristown, PA; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Price and Savannah and Jake Marshall. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 1 at the Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A., 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, MD 21054. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will occur at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 8501 LeSalle Road, Ste. 106, Baltimore, MD 21286.
