Shirley 'Jean' Baran, 88 years old, a resident of Odenton , Maryland for the past 56 years, passed away peacefully, in the company of her loving children, at home on Monday , May 2, 2016. Jean was born June 30, 1927 to William and Irene Goble in Leavenworth, Kansas. She married Paul Baran on November 26, 1947 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. She is survived by her son Steve Baran and wife Christine of Crofton, daughter Mary Bauer of Odenton and granddaughter Mandy Bauer of Philadelphia, her brothers Bill Goble of Sebring FL and Fred Wendel of Lincoln NE and an abundance of wonderful nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Maj Paul Baran, sister Patricia Abbott, her mother and father, her adoptive parents Albert Yost and Laura Linard. She was very involved with her children's education and served as PTA President at Odenton Elementary from 1960–1962 and Publicity Chairperson for Arundel Junior High School PTA. Jean opened the new Odenton Public Library as Acting Head Librarian in May of 1969. She continued to serve as Childrens Librarian for 16 years until her retirement. For over 20 years, Jean and her husband Paul were famous for their annual Christmas Party where every guest received their choice of personally crafted Christmas ornaments. She loved to travel as an Army wife and enjoyed destination cruises and annual vacations to Ocean City MD. Jean was a member of the Retired Officers Wives Club of Fort Meade (secretary, treasurer, budget officer), the Crafts Group of St. Joseph's, The Widows and Widowers Lunch Bunch. Jean was also a Red Cross volunteer and secretary of the Odenton Improvement Association. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Odenton since 1960. Her greatest joy was in celebrating all of life's moments with family and friends. She graced this life with her charm, wit, intelligence, kindness and love for all of God's creations. There will be a viewing at Hardesty Funeral Home 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills MD 21054 on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A memorial service to celebrate Jean's life will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Saturday May 7, 2016 at 10am, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
