Ronald L. Sams
Ronald Lee Sams, 76, passed peacefully after a brief illness on Monday, Dec. 11 at The Dove House Hospice in Westminster, Maryland.
Born Dec. 10, 1941 in Bedford, Pa., he was the son of the late Hannah Eileen Lee Sams and Willis Mowry Sams. He was the beloved husband of Carol BealesSams, the father of Kathleen (David) Berch, Sharon (Gregory, dec.) Sopp and Susan (Kevin) O’Neill and the cherished grandfather of Nathan and Erin Berch; Carrie, Katie and Allie Sopp; and Maggie and Abby O’Neill.Also surviving is a brother Wayne (Virginia)Sams and family in Texas.
He was raised in Cumberland and Langley Park, Md. and was a graduate of High Point High School. He served his country for more than 35 years, as an airman in the United States Air Force,a postal carrier and an analyst with the Department of Defense.
After marrying Carol on Jan. 12, 1963, the couple was stationed in England before relocating to Florida and then to Riverdale, Md. During his time with the DOD, the family lived in Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany, and Gambrills, Md. Following his retirement from the federal government, he was an employee of General Dynamics and CSC.
In 1981, he received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College, European Division.
He devoted more than 30 years in service to the Glen Burnie Civitan Club, serving in many leadership positions, including as club president and in leadership on the district level. Active in theFirst Evangelical Lutheran Church of Odenton, he served as an elder and a spiritual leader.
At the time of his death, he was a resident of Sykesville, Md.
Friends may call on Tuesday, Dec. 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, Md. Funeral service will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8397 Piney Orchard Parkway, Odenton, Md. on Wednesday, Dec 20 at 11:30a.m. with interment following the service at the Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery, Crownsville, Md.
