Pearl Jane Collins

Pearl Jane Collins, age 77, of Annapolis, passed away peacefully at Annapolitan Assisted Living on October 20, 2018.

Jane was born on October 27th 1940, the daughter of Edwin and Nancy Thick. She grew up in the Shinfield parish of Reading, England, where she attended Ryeish Green School. She would later recall her childhood in a Tudor-era home surrounded by fields and orchards, and competitive sports at Ryeish Green, where she excelled in field hockey and track, especially the 100 meter hurdles.

In her early twenties Jane moved to London and then to New York City, where she worked as a receptionist and secretary for advertising firms on Madison Avenue. It was in New York that she met her husband John "Jack" Collins -- a fellow English immigrant and an engineer in the confectionary business. They married in 1966, and remained inseparable until Jack's passing in 2011.

They moved in 1968 to Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, a quiet and pastoral contrast with their Manhattan days. This was their home for three decades, and Jane took particular pride in renovating two 18th century homes there. By extraordinary effort, she worked her way up to the personnel office at the apparel manufacturer Kleinert's, and eventually became an HR manager at Alco Standard Corporation. She then started and for many years ran her own consulting company, Collins Resource.

In their later years Jack and Jane moved to St Augustine, Florida, where they spent nearly twenty years in a beach home of their own design, and where Jane returned to her fascination with houses by working as a real estate agent with Olde Carriage Realty. After Jack's passing, she lived in Annapolis, just a few blocks from her brother Richard and his family, and in the company of her dog Twiggy. She is survived by her brothers Richard and Ivor, her sons Peter and Paul, and her grandchildren Morgan and Bramwell.

A remembrance of family and friends to celebrate Jane's life will be held from 2-4pm, with a Memorial Service beginning at 2:30pm on Sunday November 4th at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jane's memory can be made to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, at
