Mary Margaret Miller, a 48-year resident of Millersville, MD in the community of Brightwood, passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Chesapeake on Monday, December 11th, 2017 at the age of 83.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Adam J. Miller and three sons Joe, Philip, and Billy. She is survived by her daughters Rose Kelley and her husband Roy Kelley, Margaret Miller and her husband Rob Laura, and Marlene Miller. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Carrie Broersma and her husband Chris Broersma, Shannon Kelley and her husband Rob Reeves, and Kyle Kelley.

Mary was born on January 23, 1934 in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania and grew up in the Pittsburgh area. She had 12 siblings, and is survived by Ed Wright and his wife Dotty, Rose Weber, Roy Wright, and Bill Wright and his wife Ruth.

Mary exhibited her green thumb in growing beautiful flowers. She had a talent for drawing, painting, creating cartoon characters, and baking at a young age. She and Adam got married when she was 21 years old. Mary worked as an administrative assistant at the Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. She then became a homemaker after having children. While her children and grandchildren gave her joy, she held various part time jobs over the years including being a soup artisan, biscuit maker, and seasonal retail sales associate.

Mary was best known for her warmth, kindness, generosity, and creativity. She never met a stranger and put everyone at ease. She took great joy in being the magical mom of Brightwood by leading nature walks in the woods to dig up old bones and bottles, forage for blackberries that she made into cobbler, and lead many fun activities.

Mary was into recycling, composting, and gardening way before it was cool to be earth conscious. You could find old plastic bottles, cans, and straws twirling around in the wind in one of her many gardens. She believed in natural healing and loved diagnosing people’s ailments, having a collection of medical books ranging from the Mayo Clinic to Prevention magazine.

Mary was all about the bling when it came to fashion. She loved sparkly blouses and costume jewelry. She always wanted to light up the room, and she did. Mary had a lucky thumb with scratch off lottery tickets and slot machines. You could also find her singing show tunes, oldies, and pop songs alike. She was an avid collector, most notably of angels, cardinals, frogs, turtles, and snowmen.

Her greatest talent was as an artist. Her favorite scenes to paint were flowers, landscapes, and the ocean. She was infamous in the neighborhood for having the most creative sets for dances and decorations for the holidays, winning the grand prize for Christmas decorating several years in a row. The Winnie the Pooh she and Adam carved out of wood and hand painted was her favorite. She developed adorable cartoon characters, quickly dashed off with an encouraging note inside of each of her children’s lunch; whether brown bag or vintage lunch boxes like Wonder Woman or Star Wars.
