Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Leroy Appleman, 84, a resident of Gambrills for 45 years, died July 5 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.

Born March 11, 1921, in Danville, Pa., Sgt. Maj. Appleman fought at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II with the 28th Division. He retired with more than 21 years of service and had been stationed with the Army Security Agency for many years. After his military career, he worked at the Goddard Space Center.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 66, Disabled American Veterans Chapter Omaha Beach No. 7 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8950.

Gardening, working crossword puzzles, fishing and hunting were among his interests.

He was formerly married to Florence Conover of Crofton and was the widower of Loucille Appleman. He was the father of the late Terry Leroy Appleman.

Surviving are a daughter, Gale Matteo of Crofton; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Crownsville with burial to follow. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills.
