E. Matthew Goyette

August 9, 1950 - November 30, 2017
Born in Denver, CO
Resided in Shady Side, Maryland

E. Matthew Goyette, 67, of Shady Side died peacefully in his sleep on November 30. The cause was cardiac arrest. Matt was a teacher and principal at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville for many years.
He was born in Denver, Colorado, and as a child lived in Germany while his father served as an Army physician. Matt graduated from Dartmouth College and received a Master’s degree in British literature from The Catholic University of America. He taught at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis and then, from 1978 until he retired in 2017, at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville. He served as principal at McNamara for 12 years, but returned to the classroom, his true love, in 2000. His passions were British literature and history; he spent 15 summers studying at Cambridge University focusing on Shakespeare, medieval history, and other topics that enhanced his teaching. He also enjoyed reading, traveling, visiting family, gardening, and, in his youth, wilderness canoeing.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara, and their sons Nathan (Chelsea) of Encinitas, California; Daniel (Xuan) of Montclair, California; and Timothy (Rachel) of Metarie, Louisiana; and by his grandson Jackson, and his sisters Cynthia Goyette and Patricia Miller. He is remembered for his gentle compassionate nature, his humor, and his intelligence by his colleagues and by the hundreds of students whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Bishop McNamara High School for the Goyette Endowed Faculty Fund.
