Obituary

Dr. James Michael Carrick, age 48, of San Diego, CA passed away on January 4, 2019. He was born on June 3, 1970 in Cheverly, Maryland. He was the beloved son of Bernard and Carmela Carrick of Shady Side, Maryland. He was the Valedictorian of the DeMatha Catholic High School, Class of 1988. He graduated with honors from the Catholic University of America in 1992 where his name is forever etched into the H.P. Ward award on the wall of the Chemistry Library for his outstanding academic performance. He continued his education and completed two years of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then changed his educational focus and received his Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of Southern California. He had a very successful career at Gen-Probe Inc. in San Diego, CA as a Staff Scientist and Senior Product Development Manager during which he contributed to 20 United States patents, 7 of which he was named inventor. He received exceptional awards for his outstanding work in the field of infectious diseases, including the GenProbe Innovation Award. Jimmy is survived by his parents, Bernard and Carmela Carrick, and siblings Geri Arillo, Jeanne Facchina, Daniel Carrick and Patricia Shunney. Several close friends in both Maryland, and California also loved Jimmy. Of significant note is his long-term friendship with Dr. Mike Valdez who was always there for Jimmy.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Galesville, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River, MD. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD.
