David Hanford Stephenson, 76, of Annapolis and previously of New York City, died November 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a 6-month battle with brain cancer.
Born September 7, 1936 in New York City, David had B.S., MM, Physics and Music degrees from Columbia and a Ph.D in Musicology from the University of Maryland. He was a St. John's College Professor from 1963 to present. He was a member of the College Music Society and directed St. John's College's orchestra and chamber group. He enjoyed writing, conducting singing, classical music, learning to speak and read foreign languages such as French, German and Greek and travel.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Stephenson, whom he married in 1959; daughter, Jennie Stephenson; and brother Edward Stephenson of Vienna, Austria.
