Christiana Showacre Alexander, 88, of Gaithersburg and formerly of Annapolis, died Nov. 16 at Asbury Methodist Village where she had lived for a year.

Born June 28, 1916, in Doubs in Frederick County, Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of the late Edgar H. and Elsie Gerstell Showacre. She graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1937.

As the daughter of a Methodist minister, she traveled with her parents on church circuits throughout the state.

For nearly 20 years she taught history and government and was student council advisor at Annapolis High School.

A member of Calvary United Methodist Church since 1948, she taught Sunday school and was active in the Women's Society for Christian Service, now the United Methodist Women.

Among her interests were gardening in her Pendennis Mount backyard and at the family farm near Keyser, W.Va., where she and her husband spent many weekends.

She was married to Fred Alexander, whom she met while teaching school near her home in Laurel. He died in 1984.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Duane Alexander of Ellicott City and Dr. Arnold Alexander, a former Annapolis physician, now of Naples, Fla.; one brother, Harold Showacre of Annapolis; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Calvary United Methodist Church, where services will be at 2 p.m. Burial is private.
