Obituary

Gwenn Keiko Azama, 64, of Annapolis, MD, passed away at Arundel Medical Center Friday, July 28th, 2017. She was a very special woman whose passionate love of life, creativity, and compassion made everyone she cared about a better person. Her actions imparted the gift of understanding uncompromising kindness to everyone she touched.

Gwenn was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Masuyuki Hanta and Katherine Kaneko residing in Kaneohe, HI. An extraordinarily creative soul, Gwenn graduated from Castle High School and left for New York to attend the Pratt Institute, School of Design to study fashion design. She later attended classes at UCLA, before receiving a B.S. in Fashion Design and Merchandising from the University of Hawaii and a M.S. in Technology Systems Management from the University of Southern California (USC). In 2007, Gwenn graduated from the Leadership Anne Arundel Flagship Program.

Gwenn was married to Owen E. Cook, Jr on August 8, 2004, a celebration of their 27 year partnership.

For nearly 30 years, Gwenn was an accomplished Information Technology Sales Professional culminating her career as a Global Account Manager for one of Dell’s most important customers. She also worked professional sales executive and management positions for Digital Equipment Corporation and J.E. Cain Company. Living on the water near Annapolis, Gwenn was passionate about efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay Water watershed so she actively volunteered and supported the South River Federation, ultimately serving on their Board of Directors from 2004-2015.

She enjoyed travelling, learning, sewing, nurturing young minds through creative activities and adventures, reading, being an Auntie and Granny, and spending time with friends and family.

Gwenn is survived by her husband Owen; his children Monica, Jennifer, and Adam; cherished grandchildren; Madison, Benjamin, and Calista; and by her sisters; Phyllis, Janice, and Carol; and their children; Star, Dawn, Taylor, Wesley, Ryan, Wayne, and Joyce; and Star’s daughter Hope. She also leaves behind many special caring relatives and special friends; Laurie, Leslie, Keolu, and Kincey.

Gwenn was preceded in death by her parents, Masuyuki and Katherine Hanta.

A Memorial Gathering to remember Gwenn will held Saturday, August 12th from 1-3 PM at the Hardesty Funeral Home Annapolis located 12 Ridgely Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401. Another gathering will be held in Hawaii for her Ohana and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the South River Federation or American Lyme Disease Foundation.
