Obituary

Walter Joseph "Pop" Ankney, 75, of Annapolis and formerly of Rixeyville, Va., and Davidsonville, died of complications of Alzheimer's disease July 13 at Hospice House in Linthicum.

Born Sept. 17, 1930, in Somerset, Pa., Mr. Ankney served in the Army during the Korean War as a sergeant. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Combat Medical Badge and the Korean Service Medal.

Mr. Ankney retired from the Naval Academy in 1985, where he began in the early 1960s as a civilian gate guard and later became a steamfitter.

He was a member of Hazel River Assembly of God and his interests included fishing, watching western movies, gardening and chopping wood.

Surviving are his wife, Lottie L. Ankney, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1951; two sons, Glenn R. Ankney of Arnold and Daniel J. Ankney Sr. of Columbia, Md.; one daughter, Gwenda Davenport of Annapolis; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
