Obituary

Virginia Smith Wood, 89, of Galesville, died at her home on May 31, after a brief illness.

She was born in Bestgate, on Sept. 22, 1920 to Nelson and Ruth Tucker Smith. She attended Galesville Elementary School and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1937. She then attended Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C.

She married Robert O. Wood in Dec. 1938. Mrs. Wood worked for Smith Brothers Pile Driving, Inc. for 35 years, serving as secretary and bookkeeper.

She was an active member of the West River Improvement Association and the Galesville Historical Society. She also belonged to the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the Galesville Community Center Organization, and has been a supporter of the Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was a lifelong member of the Galesville United Methodist Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. Mrs. Wood was a co-founder of the Lively Inspirational Fellowship on Tuesdays (LIFT).

Mrs. Wood was pre-deceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert O. Wood, and two grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters. Gay Wood Green of Foley, Ala., Abigail W. Cole of Dover, Del., and Cynthia W. Czubat of Galesville; one sister, Colleen Scotten of Galesville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
