Obituary

Hugh Mansfield Amos, 87, of Punta Gorda, FL and formerly of Annapolis, MD was called to his heavenly home on February 6, 2012 after a 41 year struggle with heart disease. Hugh passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and with the wonderful support of Tidewell Hospice. Hugh happily spent the last ten years of his life in Punta Gorda, FL, married to his former high school classmate.

Hugh was born July 6, 1924 in Indianapolis, IN, son of Lowell and Leatha Amos. He lived in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin as a boy, moving 11 times in 12 years before completing high school at Decatur Central High in Indianapolis in 1943. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard during his Sr. year of school and served honorably from March 12, 1943 to May 9, 1946. He was a Radioman aboard many vessels with ports in Norfolk, VA, Algiers, LA, Boston, MA, Greenland, Alaska, Africa and Europe. One of Hugh's great joys was attending reunions thru the years both with family in Indiana and with his Coast Guard buddies off the USS Uniontown, PF-65. He attended Perdue University on the GI bill, studying Building Construction and excelling in sales throughout his career as an Acoustic Specialist. His sales territory covered the Eastern US, Virginia to Maine. Hugh made friends everywhere he traveled. After retirement, Hugh mastered a new career managing the medical billing for his son-in-law's busy medical practice.

Another great joy of Hugh's was music; singing in the church choir, performing in musical theater in CT, participating in the Bowie, MD, Knights of Harmony Barbershop Chorus and always singing with his family. He participated in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Assistant Scoutmaster as both his sons achieved Eagle Scout. Hugh was a loving family man with a deep faith in his Lord Savior, Jesus Christ. His kindness, good humor and good looks will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of ten years, Nelda (Cain) Amos; children, Randall Hugh (Tammy) Amos; Nancy Lynn (Mike) Singleton and David Mansfield Amos; step-children, Tom (Chris) Cain, Kevin (Leslie) Cain, Diane (Linley) Pearson and Margie (Steve) Redden; sisters, Audrey Monaghan, Virginia Franzke and Carol Dugen; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren; numerous adored and adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Erma (Culmann) Amos; his mother, father and step-mother, Virginia (Hauke) Amos, as well as his brothers, Donald and Russell.
