Elizabeth Everett "Libby" Johnston, 97, a five-year resident of Severna Park, died of a stroke Oct. 14 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park after a week-long illness.

Mrs. Johnston was born Jan. 27, 1910, in State College, Pa., and earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Pennsylvania State University. She earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University.

She taught first grade and kindergarten at Owensville and Germantown Elementary schools and St. Luke's Kindergarten, which she founded.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the Grenadier Island Country Club, the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association, Christ Episcopal Church and St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church.

Her interests included knitting, bridge, needlepoint, playing mah jong and volunteering at the Severna Park Public Library and the Hospice of the Chesapeake Chesapeake Treasures boutique.

In 1934 she married Robert M. Johnston, who died in 1975. She was the mother of the late Bill Johnston.

Surviving are one son, Robert M. Johnston Jr. of Aumsville, Ore.; three daughters, Betty Knickerbocher of Severna Park, Lucy Wilson of Friendship and Mary Harbold of Honolulu; one sister, Ruth Morck of Lenanon, N.H.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
