Obituary

Althea Olsen (Bunny) Ames

Born in Coventry, Conn. On March 21st to the late Arthur Olsen and Elsie Underfinger Olsen.

Althea is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frederic R. Ames whom she married on New Year's Eve, 1953 in Coventry, Conn. She is also survived by 4 children, Deborah Whittington (Terry) of Deale, Lori Mitchell (Clay) of Stevensville, Frederic "Rick" Ames of Ocean City and Brenda Ames Tarr of Shady Side. 6 grandchildren, Ryan Whittington, Lindsay Tarr, Jessica Ames, Daniel Ames, Andy Mitchell and Ryan Mitchell. She is also survived by a brother Arthur Olsen of Manchester, Conn. Althea also had 2 sisters and 1 brother who are deceased.

Althea was educated in Coventry grade schools and graduated in 1951 from Manchester High School in Manchester, Conn. She attended post graduate business schools.

She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church, in Shady Side, Lady Elks of Annapolis, Beta Sigma Phi and Lady's Auxiliary of the Marlin Club in Ocean City. Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the West River Yacht Club.

Althea was known for her knitting, refinishing antiques, crafts and stenciling. She and her husband made winter berry bowls which she presented to her friends and family during the holidays and sold to florists. She was instrumental in initiating the Baton and Drum Core in Shady Side in 1968.
Althea loved to travel and visited several European Countries and South America. She was a big fan of the Washington Redskins and attended all the home games. Althea also had a love for dogs, especially Yorkshire terriers and collies.

Althea was very proud of her mother's family in Switzerland who are named in the "who's who" in Europe.

She worked as a supervisor at Pratt & Whitney and United Aircraft in Harford, Conn and IBM in Boston, Mass. where she taught data processing. In Maryland she worked in payroll for Arinc and Chesapeake Instrument. Althea also taught business classes at the Fleet School of Business in Annapolis.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday May 15 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A., 905 Galesville Rd., Galesville, MD. A Funeral Service will be on Wednesday May 16 at 11am at Centenary United Methodist Church, 6248 Shady Side Rd., Shady Side, MD. Interment to follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake or the SPCA of Annapolis.
